STATEMENT: Throne Speech doesn’t focus on what Canadian families need most

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EDMONTON, AB – Matt Jeneroux, the Member of Parliament for Edmonton Riverbend, released the following statement after the Governor General delivered the federal government’s Speech from the Throne:

“The past few months have been unprecedented in modern history, and Canadians were looking to the federal government for leadership through the next phase of the pandemic. However, that responsible stewardship was nowhere to be found in today’s Speech from the Throne.

“Instead of focusing on what Canadian families have repeatedly said they need – a clear health care plan, economic leadership and reining in the deficit – the government has chosen to use the pandemic as an opportunity to add new, frivolous spending priorities that continue to build on our mounting deficit. Future generations of Canadians will be the ones paying the price for this irresponsible spending.

“Many Canadians are facing mounting debt and precarious employment in an uncertain economy. The government must focus on helping these Canadians instead of completely shifting its focus to pie-in-the-sky policies. I look forward to returning to Ottawa in October to continue holding the government to account.”
