STATEMENT: The Liberal Government’s Clean Electricity Regulations will Significantly increase Canadians’ Utility Bills

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault laid out the Liberal government’s draft Clean Electricity Regulations, meant to ensure a net-zero grid by 2035 this summer: https://liberal.ca/climate/clean-electricity-a-net-zero-grid-by-2035/. This is completely unrealistic.

After eight years of Justin Trudeau, Canadians have seen their lives become more unaffordable thanks to the inflationary carbon tax. If that wasn’t bad enough, now the Liberal government is bringing in a second hidden carbon tax to further hike the price of gas, heat and groceries. The newly released Liberal plan for “Clean Electricity Regulations” is further adding salt to insult. These new regulations will only make electricity bills way too expensive. A memo from the Environment Minister’s own department has confirmed that this ideological agenda will significantly “increase the cost” of utility bills that Canadians have to pay every month. Some estimates suggest the cost of this Liberal plan could be as high as $1.7 trillion.

We put forward a motion on September 28 calling on the federal government to repeal all carbon taxes to bring home lower prices on gas, groceries, and home heating. While this Liberal government is only focusing on promoting ideological agendas and does not care about Canadians who are facing a cost-of-living crisis, we do. We will axe inflationary taxes and cut Liberal red tape so that we can create cheap and clean electricity. We will use technology, not taxes, to reduce emissions without burdening Canadians with out-of-control utility bills.
