FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EDMONTON, AB – Matt Jeneroux, the Member of Parliament for Edmonton Riverbend, released the following statement about the passage of Bill C-7: An Act to amend the Criminal Code (Medical Assistance in Dying) in the Senate:

“After passage in the House of Commons last week, the Senate has voted to quickly pass significant changes to Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) laws. Changes include allowing access to MAiD to Canadians whose death is not imminent and will eventually include those suffering from mental illnesses.

“I voted against these changes in the House of Commons and have consistently voted against amendments to open up MAiD for more access. I fear that vulnerable Canadians will be the most impacted by these changes.

“Bill C-7 removes safeguards for vulnerable Canadians and places physicians in tough situations. This legislation deserves fulsome review by the Supreme Court of Canada.”
