Edmonton, AB – Matt Jeneroux, the Member of Parliament for Edmonton Riverbend, today released this statement on the peaceful protests by farmers in India:

“Canadians uphold basic human rights, such as the freedom of expression and the freedom of peaceful assembly, which are the hallmarks of a just and democratic society. Farmers from the Indian states of Punjab and Haryana have, for several months, been peacefully protesting a domestic legislative change that affects their agricultural enterprises.

“Seeing some of the shocking and disturbing images from across social media are concerning to not only myself but many Canadians. I raise my voice with all those around the world for this violence to end.

“The right to peaceful protest is key in any democracy.”
