Statement on the vandalism of Catholic churches

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EDMONTON, AB – Matt Jeneroux, the Member of Parliament for Edmonton Riverbend, issued the following statement:

“In the past few weeks, Canadians have had to confront the horrific realities of residential schools and the unjust treatment of Indigenous peoples. We’ve mourned together as a nation and will continue to do so.

“A number of Catholic churches have been burned down or vandalized in response to the news of the discovery of bodies of former residential students found at former school sites around the country. I condemn these acts and push for full accountability for those found responsible.

“Canada’s history is far from perfect. Learning more about aspects of our past can and will be painful, but destruction and violence cannot be what we turn to. This is not the road to reconciliation. Reconciliation builds up our country. Actions like this tear down and destroy. The future of our country will be defined by how we build Canada up, not tear it down.”
