FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EDMONTON, AB – Matt Jeneroux, the Shadow Minister for Health and the Member of Parliament for Edmonton Riverbend, released the following statement about imposing Magnitsky sanctions on China and Hong Kong for human rights abuses:

“I am one of 17 Members of Parliament who signed an open letter calling on the Prime Minister to get tough on relations with China and Hong Kong and consider imposing targeted financial sanctions against Hong Kong and Chinese officials. These governments have committed grave human rights abuses against citizens, with the introduction of the National Security Law in Hong Kong and the treatment of the Uighur and Muslim minority in China.

“Two Canadians continue to languish in a Chinese prison while this current federal government continues to cozy up to China. I signed this letter to signify my support of tougher sanctions on this regime.”
