STATEMENT: Liberal Government to Invoke Emergencies Act

February 16, 2022
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA, ON- Matt Jeneroux, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Riverbend, released the following statement on the Prime Minister implementing the Emergencies Act.

“This week, the Prime Minister invoked the Emergencies Act to end various protests, instead of supporting a motion to create a plan that would end COVID-19 restrictions and allow for peaceful resolution.

“It seems that this Liberal Government is out-of-step with Canadians. Provincial governments have started announcing their plans to lift Covid-19 restrictions and yet the Prime Minister has doubled down and refused to offer support and put forward his own plan.

“Unfortunately, we have seen little attempts by the Prime Minister to de-escalate the situation. Imposing powers of the Emergencies Act sets a dangerous precedent. The Government of Canada should not have the power to close the bank accounts of Canadians simply on the suspicion of supporting causes of which the government doesn’t approve.

“This is a slippery slope, and not how the government should operate in a free and democratic society. That is why I will be voting against the Emergencies Act.”
