STATEMENT: Fall economic statement does not have clear plan for Canada

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA, ON – Matt Jeneroux, the Member of Parliament for Edmonton Riverbend, releases the below statement following the federal government’s fall economic statement:

“Today, the government released its long-overdue fall economic statement. Instead of putting forward a plan to get back to normal, the Liberals released a plan to reimagine the Canadian economy.

“There was no plan for getting Canadians back to work, nor a plan for helping shuttered businesses reopen. Our deficit will hit almost $400 billion. Instead of presenting a credible plan to tackle the deficit in a reasonable time period, the government is instead prioritizing long-promised social programs that they have been unable to bring to fruition in the past five years.

“There can be no plan for the economy without a plan for rapid testing and vaccines. Right now, the government has no plan for receiving vaccines. There is no plan for distributing vaccines to Canadians. There isn’t even a plan for who will get the vaccine first.

“While the Americans and Brits are talking about mass vaccination throughout December and January, our government is now talking about getting Canadians vaccinated in September. That’s ten more months of uncertainty, businesses closing, mental health challenges, families remaining separated and workers not knowing if their shifts will be cancelled.

“Canadians have endured enough. We need to get this country working again. We need to get this country healthy again. Canadians deserve certainty, clarity and competence from their government.”
