FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa, ON – Matt Jeneroux, Conservative MP for Edmonton Riverbend, released the following statement on the passing of his private member’s bill C-220, An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code (Bereavement Leave):

“I’m pleased that my compassionate bereavement bill passed today with unanimous support in the House of Commons.

“This bill will extend bereavement leave for Canadians who are mourning the death of a loved one. The bill would double the current five days of bereavement leave allowed under the Canada Labour Code to 10 days.

“The pandemic has demonstrated how important it is to have bereavement supports in place. Over the past year, many people have told us that the current bereavement leave time allowed in Canada is not enough. This legislation is a positive change for the thousands of Canadians who suffer a loss every year.

“I want to thank our stakeholders and the witnesses who spoke to the bill at committee and my fellow Parliamentarians for their support.”
