On December 30, 2020, the federal government announced all airline passengers must obtain a COVID-19 test before entering Canada. The test must be negative and must have been taken within three days of arrival.

The test must be a PCR test, which is processed in a lab and usually takes at least a day to return results.

These test results must be obtained at the traveler’s own expense.

These rules will come into force on January 7. Travelers who don’t present test results or who don’t have an isolation plan may be housed at federal facilities.

The tests won’t replace the mandatory 14-day quarantine period for international travelers. Travelers must also show border agents proof of their isolation plan.
