Edmonton Murder Highlights Concerns About Public Safety
On Saturday, Canadians were shocked by the senseless and tragic murder of Harshandeep Singh, a 20-year-old security guard in Edmonton, Alberta. Singh was fatally shot while performing his duties as a nighttime security guard at an apartment building in central Edmonton. His death is a heartbreaking loss to his family and friends.
“Our hearts go out to Harshandeep’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” said MP Matt Jeneroux.
Edmonton Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the murder. Evan Rain, 30, and Judith Saulteaux, 30, have been charged with first-degree murder in relation to Singh’s death. Early reports suggest that Rain has a history of violent offenses, including a 2018 kidnapping charge in Wetaskiwin and multiple serious charges in 2022.
This tragic event raises serious questions about the state of Canada’s justice system. Under the government, crime rates have continued to rise. Measures like Bill C-75 and Bill C-5, which prioritize releasing repeat offenders and limit mandatory sentences for certain violent crimes, have not helped to improve public safety. The result has been an increase in violent crime across the country. Violent crime has surged by 50% since 2015, and Canada’s violent crime rate now is 14% higher than that of the United States, according to the Fraser Institute.
Despite this, the government’s response has focused on restricting law-abiding gun owners, rather than addressing the real drivers of violent crime. Violent gun crime has increased by a staggering 116% since the Liberals took office.
Canadians deserve to feel safe in their communities. It’s time for a change in approach—one that ensures the safety of all Canadians by holding repeat violent offenders accountable and restoring a justice system that prioritizes public safety. Please be assured that my colleagues and I are committed to making our streets safer and ending the current catch-and-release approach to crime.
