Re. “Prompt action on EI reform critical,” Letters, Linda Duncan, March 7
Job losses in Alberta are not only a problem for the economy, but also for the families affected.
With provincial and federal governments talking about Employment Insurance reform, I want to stress the importance of remembering that EI is a temporary support to overcome a difficult situation, such as the one many Albertans are facing today. It is not a permanent solution. The best remedy for those who are currently collecting EI is job creation.
This will only come from an effective plan that works with investors and the private sector to create conditions suitable for a job-creating economy. Creating these conditions comes with lowering taxes, and creating programs that encourages job creation, and helping to match workers and jobs. This should be at the top of the government’s agenda.
