OTTAWA- Yesterday, people around the country saw homes, and communities ravaged by wildfires in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. These wildfires have forced more than 80,000 to evacuate in Fort McMurray and surrounding areas. Dry conditions, low humidity and high winds have impacted the ability of crews to fight the fire and several homes have been destroyed.
My thoughts are with the families of Fort McMurray and surrounding areas who have lost their homes, and have been forced to evacuate to other areas of Alberta. I want to thank the brave men and women who are battling these fires and doing all that they can to protect the affected communities. Additionally I want to thank those who are joining the fight around the country from providing shelter, food or donating to the Red Cross.
Albertans everywhere continue to remind me of what a strong and resilient group of people we are. When a helping hand is needed Albertans are always there to provide one, and for that I am grateful.
